This approach in therapy is based on looking at us as all having many parts to ourselves.  As simply as a part of us that wants to clean the kitchen and a part of us that simultaneously wants to play outside.

An example of how this can be utilized is to suppose a client was abused by a blonde man at the age of 6.  Now, at 47, the client feels rapid heart rate, feelings of fear and disgust everytime they interact with a blonde man.  Through therapy, they can learn how to heal that 6 yr old within and help the 6 yr old realize they are now in a 47 yr old body, the trauma happened 41 years ago and they are now able to play as 6 yr olds do and let the 47 yr old deal with the blonde man in the way they feel is appropriate based on the information they have about him.

One of my main ways of utilizing this approach is to ask you to "notice what part of you is feeling that feeling or having that belief"; or "when is the first time you remember feeling that way/having that belief."

I often utilize this therapy in conjunction with EMDR therapy.
